What it does

• Encrypts your traffic – NordVPN routes all data through an encrypted tunnel (AES‑256‑GCM with perfect‑forward secrecy), shielding it from ISPs, hackers on public Wi‑Fi, or government surveillance.
• Masks your IP address – Your real IP is replaced by one of NordVPN’s 6,000‑plus servers in 60+ countries, letting you appear to be browsing from almost anywhere in the world.
• Bypasses geo‑blocks & censorship – Streaming platforms, gaming servers, or sites restricted by location or network filters can usually be reached by switching to an appropriate server.
• Blocks threats – The optional “Threat Protection” layer scans downloads for malware, blocks trackers, and stops known malicious domains before they load.
• Offers specialty servers – Double‑VPN (traffic routed through two servers), Onion‑over‑VPN (Tor plus VPN), P2P‑optimized servers, and obfuscated servers for restrictive networks.

How it works

1. Client apps (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, smart‑TVs, and browser extensions) establish a secure VPN tunnel using the WireGuard‑based “NordLynx” protocol by default, or OpenVPN/IKEv2 if you prefer.
2. DNS & WebRTC leak protection keeps identity data from slipping outside the tunnel.
3. Kill switch (system‑wide or app‑level) cuts internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, preventing accidental exposure.
